Ascend Kids exists to provide hope for children who have been overlooked.
Some are overlooked by society because of a disability.
Some are overlooked by their own families because of disease or other circumstances.
These children face large obstacles to reach their full potential.
They have little opportunity to learn, to lead, or to give back to their communities.
These kids are also unable to play sports.
Ascend serves these children in hope that they will find the support and space they need to reach their full potential in academics & society. Our full-time case worker, Francis, provides individualized support to children in Ascend Kids, making sure they are nourished, going to school, getting the medicine they need, and going to doctor's appointments, among other things.

Lamin crossed our paths as a young teenager struggling with sickness and apprenticing to be a taxi driver.
When we met, he was without parents and struggling to breathe through a heavy, persistent cough.
He now has the medications he needs, is learning English, and recently received his driver's license.
Buba draws in everyone he meets with his contagious smile and exceptional personality.
Five years ago, he was living as an orphan in a village where people simply labeled him "deaf".
Today, under the care of Francis, Buba is living in the capital where he can attend school. He is not only learning sign language, but last year was the top student in his class. He also continues to bring a smiles to new faces every day.
HOW WE DO IT
HOW WE DO IT
Ascend Kids is a continuation of efforts made by founders of Ascend Together during their time as volunteers with Peace Corps The Gambia. The idea of inclusiveness has long been a guiding principle of Ascend. Our RISE Gambia program focuses on athletic and academic development of high potential and committed student athletes. Beyond RISE Gambia, we open up our courts to neighborhood youths, and invite them and other organizations to our guest speakers and events whenever possible.
We also want to create hope and opportunity for communities that are often overlooked in the Gambia.
It is impossible to spend time here without coming across stories of kids who are orphaned, handicapped, or disabled. We can't help every child in Gambia who has exceptionally tough circumstances, but there are 3 that we have been supporting in different capacities since 2013.
Ascend Kids is funded through a grant from the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Club. With their financial support, we currently provide the support that Ish, Lamin, and Buba need. Ascend Kids will also be holding larger programming events in the coming year to provide opportunities for more individuals who are not currently receiving regular support. These events will be made possible through the involvement and leadership of our RISE Gambia students.
